Review of Quizlet.com

Quizlet is a free web tool that can be used to study vocabulary for any subject. Any language teacher can use this tool for students to practice vocabulary and expressions. Students will find it easy to use because it was designed by a middle school French student as a tool to study for vocabulary quizzes.

First, teachers create an account and then find existing information or create new quizzes. Teachers create study sets and organize the materials into classes. Students can then log on to a teacher’s account and access pre-made quizzes in six different modes: flashcard, spell, space race, test, scatter, or learn. Students can track their progress and review what they get wrong in the learn form. The scatter allows students to match the German and English words and their translations. Students race to recognize words before they leave the screen in the space race. This tool is particularly useful because it includes a function that allows students to hear the German words pronounced as they see the words. Quizlet can be used individually or socially. Students can work together on a quiz or engage in friendly competition. Also, the application can be accessed through Facebook. Quizlet even offers a mobile application. This is particularly helpful for students who do not have internet access at home, but do have access on their phone.

Teachers may create up to eight classes in the free version of Quizlet. Many teachers will find the free version of Quizlet will meet the needs of their students. However, if teachers feel they need more accessibility or want to add images from Flickr or from personal collections, they can upgrade to a paid version of Quizlet. The paid version also allows the teacher to add a badge to a website. One very useful addition to the paid version is that teachers can track student use which makes it easier to use Quizlet as an assignment either in the classroom or as homework.

  1. Darlene, this sounds like an excellent site for reviewing material and assessing knowledge of the material. I think the free version of Quizlet would be helpful but if a teacher wants to utilize this in the classroom then the paid version would be more useful.
It would be a great tool to assess student's prior knowledge as well! Why teach material if the kids already know it?
Also, I liked how the quizzes can be presented in different formats. This is a great way to accommodate different learning and motivational styles.
Finally, I think it is awesome that a middle schooler created this website. How innovative!

  2. I have used the free version successfully as an in class activity. It depends on what you want to do with it.

And you are exactly right about using it as an assessment tool to discover whether or not material is already mastered.

I too love that it accommodates different learning styles.

    Thanks for your comment!

  3. Hey Darlene,

I liked your review of Quizlet. It sounds like it has many nice features and features that would be very useful for different learning styles. I really like how you mentioned that it has audio features. Most websites do not have audio associated with them that is to enhance the learning experience. The different formats of quizzes seems like a good way of potentially changing up the routine if the tool is to be used frequently.

I've used Google forms to make quizzes and a tool that I am starting to explore for potential uses is a site called Edmodo (http://www.edmodo.com/). I've been told that this site also has quizzes but I have not had a chance to review it. I will have training on it next week. Edmodo is also a tool that might become a Knox County wide tool in the future, so that might be helpful if you teach in Knox County.

One last thing, I really like how it can be accessed from mobile phones. I think that I would set up the applications as a supplement that would go toward an alternative participation grade or replacement grade if the student used the website consistently.

I like your selection. It was very interesting.

  4. Darlene,
As a fellow foreign language teacher, this site is the JAM! I love that it not specific to one content area. Browsing the website I found everything from Spanish to Honors Biology class sets. I also like that the site allows students as well as teachers to track student progress and mastery of the subject. I also found the games to be very fun and educational! Like Abby, I found it interesting that the students can choose which type of testing they would like to be assessed with (ex. multiple choice, matching, short answer). The fact that the website has gone "mobile" is also an awesome advantage for students who are trying to get in their last minute studying :). I'm on board for Quizlet!!!!
